Wat Traimit

Wat Traimit (Mittaphap Thai-China Rd., Talat Noi, Samphanthawong, Bangkok 10100) – this temple houses a unique Buddha statue made out of 5.5 tons of solid gold (previously hidden in coatings of plaster – presumably to protect it from robbers). It is assumed that the statue came from the Sukhothai period / 13th century (when bands of maurauders threatened to invade the country and pillage its treasures). The statue’s coating was crack, revealing its gold composition, while it was being moved in 1955. It is reputed to be the largest gold statue in the world.

Hours: 9:00 am – 5:00 pm. Admission: 10 Baht. Free admission to see the golden Buddha.
